Khold: Hundre år gammal

27/08/08  ||  Euthanatos

Raw, foul, violent, relentless, gruesome black metal. That sums up Khold in a nice, cute little bundle. In a world of shit, pus and annoyance, very few bands have the balls and the heart to perform unpretentious, back to the basics, core black metal. After Tulus’ demise, Khold was formed with that in mind, and now in its fifth record, they are better at it than ever. I can’t really tell you how “Hundre år gammal” differs from “Krek” or “Phantom”, but at least for me it’s their best album since “Masterpiss of Pain”.

The thing which has always made me immensely enjoy Khold no matter what kind of riffs and harmonies they’re offering is Gard’s vocals. Unlike so many of his peers, Gard bellows out vicious, malign vocal lines without sounding like a dying crow squawking to hell. No, his aggressiveness and blatant evil is nowhere harmed by the perfect ability he has to make himself understood, not only the lyrics he is singing, but all the nuances from his performance. That is one good vocalist.

A slower, raunchier guitar playing can be heard on this record, primitive is the most appropriate adjective I can think of. Khold has stripped down everything to the bone so that you can immerse yourself in pure Norwegian darkness. Man, that sounded gay. Oh, well. All that counts is that this is a damn good album, something of a gem hidden away among the thousands of black metal releases we get each year. It’s metal in its purest, untouched form, a leviathan of a beast just waiting to drag you to the depths.

The cover: I usually really like Khold’s covers, and this one is no different. As always, it features Garm, who has the best corpse paint out there, and his face is as villainous as they come.

9 hundred year old trolls out of 10.
